One of the most acclaimed productions of its season, this enchanting three-character “silent movie opera” (based on Abram Room’s scandalous 1926 Russian film comedy) premiered at the Vineyard Theatre in New York, where it received two Obie awards and seven Drama Desk nominations, including Best Musical.
In Moscow, in 1926, a housing crisis rages. In a cramped apartment, Ludmilla (Rebeca Diaz), a put-upon housewife, lives in dreamy complacency with her cheerful despot of a husband, Kolya (Elvin Negron). When Kolya’s handsome comrade, Volodya (Noah Levine), arrives from the country, but can find no lodgings, Kolya offers him their sofa. When Kolya returns early from a business trip, he is shocked to discover that Ludmilla and Volodya have become lovers. Kolya moves out, but there is still nowhere to live, so he reluctantly returns, taking the sofa, leaving Ludmilla and Volodya the bed. Kolya attempts to stall the new couple’s lovemaking with endless games of checkers, to Ludmilla’s growing frustration. The Village Voice called it, “Wonderful! A must see! So perfectly done it is almost unfair to the rackety hacks who infest our musical theater,” and the New York Times said, “A delight! First rate! A classy treat! A new work that both honors the original and gives it a sternly funny stage life of its own.”
Performances of Bed and Sofa will be produced in the Abdo New River Room at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Patrons who wish to do so may enjoy dinner and drinks in the theatre an hour before curtain. The price of dinner and drinks is not included in the ticket.
Rebeca Diaz will be performing at the Florida Renaissance Festival in Deerfield Beach, as part of the Commedia De'l Arte acting troupe. She will be playing Clarisse, the young Innamorata in the company of the players of the Theatro Pantalone il Magnifico and the Noble House of Lombardi.
Come catch this acting troupe's funny antics and wacky adventures, with 4 staged performances and a lot of fun improvised skits. The Festival opens at Quiet Waters Park on Saturday, February 7th and will run every Saturday and Sunday (including President's Day), until March 15th.
Don't miss out on this possibility to immerse yourself in another time and another place, filled with fantasy, history, and an unforgettable experience! See you there!
Rebeca is currently on tour in Miami-Dade and Broward County's schools with Fantasy Theatre Factory's new children's show "Whales, Magic and Cheese... Oh My!".
